A monkey on a chain
Just an entertainer
Telling us about a better world
Telling us about empathy
Apolitical except for when it has no cost or risk
So inoffensive, it’s offensive
All while the organ grinder turns the handle
Mr. Nice Guy sits on his fence
A fence with razor wire, bombings, and genocide on one side
Not caring about who he throws under a bus
Until the bus is bearing down on him
And helping to silence people with much more to lose
All while the organ grinder smiles
Mr. Nice Guy is left holding the bag
With tears for only himself
Not understanding his freely given indenturment
Deep in the money world
All the while the organ grinder is counting
Mr. Nice Guy loses friends
And gains others
There are hurt feelings on both sides he says
But we don’t talk about the dead children
All the while the organ grinder is passing round his hat
Mr. Nice Guy can’t even bring himself to say words of solidarity
There are plenty of people who don’t want to get involved
Or have an opinion
But when you help silence others
You have chosen a side
All the while the organ grinder tightens his grip on the chain
Mr. Nice Guy receives 30 pieces of silver
And is angry at the fallout.
All the while the organ grinder continues with his monkey business.
